How to Keep Your Mouth Healthy

According to the World Dental Foundation, oral diseases affect 3.9 million people worldwide, with between 60% and 90% of children globally suffering from tooth decay.

The two main causes of tooth loss are decay and gum disease. The better you prevent or deal with these two problems, the more chance you will have of keeping your teeth for life. Here are some tips to keep your mouth healthy:

  • Brushing your teeth for two minutes at a time twice a day, known as the 2×2 rule, will help to keep plaque at bay.
  • Floss daily.
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3 to 6 months.
  • Stay hydrated to maintain a healthy saliva flow.
  • Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks.
  • Consider oral hygiene products like mouthwash, oral irrigators, interdental cleaners, and tongue cleaners, in conjunction with (not instead of) regular brushing and flossing.
  • Regularly examine the inside of your mouth at home.

Practicing good dental care from infancy to adulthood can help a person keep their teeth and gums healthy. Not only does good dental care help people avoid cavities, gum disease, and other dental issues, but It may also benefit their overall health.
